In 11+, students study Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The exam is taken in September of Year 6 and children typically make preparations for this in the beginning of Year 3 or 4 of primary school.
Areas covered in the test include:
Long Maths: which is word problems
Short maths: which are mental arithmetic questions
Verbal reasoning/ English: which comprises of comprehension, along with understanding of grammar, punctuation and spelling rules
Non-Verbal Reasoning: sequences, logic, coding and analysis of patterns
There are two main exam boards that children study towards called GL for Buckinghamshire schools and CEM for Berkshire schools. Children can sit both exams for the best chances of getting a place into a grammar school.
